Hello Haven Travelers! Welcome to the first installment of our bi-weekly Staff Picks!
For our very first blog post, we’ve decided to highlight our amazing staff and their current favorites. These new blog columns will run opposite to our newsletter, where we’ll give you the scoop on the latest releases in-store. Here on the blog side, we wanted to give you an up-close look at some of our community happenings, including but not limited to: new releases, exciting staff picks, educational histories, disco ball updates and more.
We here at The Haven pride ourselves in our expertise and enthusiasm for all things tabletop gaming, and we’re itching to show you some of the things we’ve been excited about this week. Three of our lovely staff members have shared some of their recent game obsessions, why they love them and what makes them stand out amongst our inventory. Without further ado, let’s dive right into this week’s staff picks!
NICOLE - New Lorcana and Reign of Jafar
“My baby, my little son. So precious, so enchanted.”
Nicole has been really into the new Lorcana set. This set, titled Reign of Jafar, has her favorite Enchanted card (Bambi), pictured here.
Reign of Jafar brings exciting additions to the Lorcana character list. This is a set for veteran players, enhancing the existing game’s deck types and base mechanics. As of writing this post, the first Lorcana world championships is steadily approaching, and with it comes the game’s first set rotation. Reign of Jafar provides players with substitute and replacement cards to the ones that will be rotated out from last year. The new Palace Heist Illumineer’s Quest provides players with new and exciting co-op gameplay, as intrepid Illumineers are pitted against Jafar in a race to collect lore.
This set provides riveting new ways to play the game, for veterans and newbies alike. Check out our website for all of our new Lorcana stock today!
MATT - Twilight Imperium
“It’s a game that keeps you engaged every moment you’re playing it; it’s a perfect mix of tactics, strategy, and diplomacy, and it’s a new game every time I play it.”
Our overlord (owner/head honcho) Matt wanted to highlight the 4th edition of Twilight Imperium this week for Staff Picks.
Twilight Imperium is a 4X Sci-Fi strategy war game where players will take control of a faction and fight over control of a post-war galaxy in an attempt to acquire the seat of the empire (try and say that three times fast). Players strategize to regain control of the map and complete public or secret objectives. As of the 4th edition, players can choose from up to 25 different factions, each with different abilities and skills. The game involves strategy, trade, politics, diplomacy, and pushes every player to participate in all of them while playing. Players can’t ignore half of the game and still win.
New additions in the game’s 4th edition streamline many of the previous editions tedious processes, providing an overall faster and smoother gameplay experience.
Make sure to snag a copy of this classic space opera at The Haven today.
KAY - New Magic and Final Fantasy
“The love and attention to detail for this set far exceeded my expectations as a massive and long time Final Fantasy fan, as well as an MTG player. This Y’shtola Commander deck (that will hopefully be restocking soon) is filled with all my favorite characters, references and memes from FFXIV and has made me so happy. It’s also cracked as hell so best buy while you can!”
Our resident sailor scout and chocobo rider Kay wanted to highlight our biggest release this month, the all new Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set!
This highly-anticipated set has been hyped up since February, and it was definitely worth the wait. All of your favorites are here, not only featured in beautiful showcase cards but also as some of the commanders. This release introduced dynamic and exciting additions to the standard Magic formula, such as the Job Select system and new summons! The new commander decks feature beautiful art and dynamic gameplay styles, from the master caster Y’shtola, to the Limit Breaking Cloud. Keep an eye out for that fabled blue chocobo (or if you’re sick of random encounters, adopt the one we have in-store).
In addition to our upcoming Friday Night Magic Final Fantasy Draft (again, try saying that three times fast), we still have limited stock of collector boosters and commander decks in stock. Make sure to come in and snag what you can before a Moogle takes it all.
That concludes our very first issue of Staff Picks! Make sure to tune in the week after next for more exciting columns and staff updates. While you wait, check out our website for upcoming events and restocks, and read up on our newsletter to keep track of our new releases.
Thanks travelers, and safe journeys!
